lery. Financed by the Sainsbury grocery family whose supermarkets are widespread throughout the country, it was opened in 1991 to house a fine collection of early Renaissance art. The building itself unleashed some heated debates: the original designs
were described by \b \cf4 \ATXht13251000 Prince Charles\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 as ôa monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved friendö. The final building, by the American architect Robert Venturi, is clearly something of a compromise, and for this reas
on has also met with considerable criticism, albeit from a different lobby. The building also contains a Micro Gallery which provides illustrated information and floorplans of the collection from a computerised database.\par
